Summer Driving Tips 2022

As we get into the Summer months it’s important for drivers to plan ahead for what the hot weather and summertime will bring. Here are a few tips to consider when working in these summer months.

  1. Protect yourself from the sun - even though you’re in the cab of the truck, sunlight can still cause burns sometimes serious burns. The left side of a driver’s body is more likely to be hit by the UV rays that can cause burns. Don’t forget to use sunscreen. Also use sunglasses, a hat, and even long sleeve shirts which can help you avoid harmful rays. Protect yourself from skin cancer by taking these precautions.

  2. Hydration is important - drinking plenty of water is critical when working in hot weather. Even in an air conditioned cab getting in an out means you’ll be in the hot climate. Keep extra water with you at all times. Eight glasses of water a day is recommended. Drink plenty of fluids.

  3. Extra Drivers on the road - vacationing families, construction equipment, people taking a drive all increase the number of vehicles on the road during the summer. Watch out for all the additional traffic. Drive defensively, you’re the professional! An estimated 33 million vehicles will hit the road in the summer months. That’s a lot of less experienced drivers than you are. Stay alert, watch your following distance, and be aware of what is happening around you at all times.

  4. More construction zones - Summertime means road construction season. It’s always important to plan ahead for unexpected construction zones during your trip. Slow down, drive defensively, watch for others who aren’t as prepared as you are in these zones. Keep your cool and if you’ve planned your trip with plenty of time you can manage the zones. Remember speeding fines double and sometimes triple in these zones - watch your speed at all times.

  5. Tire inflation is key - check your tire inflation regularly. Blowout can lead to serious circumstances. Under-inflated tire increase the chances of a blowout. Be sure your tires are inflated during you pre-trip. Use a tire gauge!

  6. Check your brakes - hot temperatures can increase brake fading or the loss of friction when components can absorb the additional heat. Always check your brakes to be sure they are functioning properly during your inspections.

  7. Watch for changing weather - summer can bring rapidly changing weather. It may be sunny where you are but quickly turn to severe weather in a short distance. Know where you’re heading and what the weather forecast is along your entire route. If you’re even is a situation that you need to shut down communicate with the Ops team and take caution. No freight is worth moving and potentially causing harm to you or those around you. Be prepared for anything.
